Yoga also for the godless, Sri M

What Akhil loves most about yoga is the challenge we face. There is always something new to learn, be it a simple posture – the moment you think you’ve got it something else will come up and you realise then that there is even more to learn. It is an exciting journey. Every practice is an opportunity to learn about yourself. Somehow practicing yoga always makes you feel like you are doing something new. As if it’s the first time you’re doing it.

Background

Akhil was brought up in a rural village in India. Even though yogic knowledge is ingrained in everyday life he didn’t fully appreciate the value of it then. It was only after suffering a back injury during his late teens, Akhil realised the potential of this ancient practice. While nothing else worked, his Ayurvedic doctor suggested a few simple yogic postures, which helped relieve the pain. But the back pain returned with the onset of his higher education studies. Akhil continued these exercises to manage the pain until a friend recommended going to the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, to study yoga in more depth. This was a life changing experience and after a few months stay in the Ashram with regular practice the pain completely subsided. He qualified as a yoga teacher in 2015 from the same Ashram where he also met his beautiful partner and Yoga Mapp teacher, Sara Newman. Together they now teach classes in and around London.
